Bagger 255 is the oldest bucket wheel excavator in operation in the world. He is currently working in the Inden opencast mine .

The manufacturer of Bagger 255 is the Lübecker Maschinenbau Gesellschaft (LMG). The electrical equipment comes from AEG .

The excavator was built in 1954 under LMG construction number 1089 and was used from 1955 to open the Fortuna-Garsdorf opencast mine . It belongs to the 100,000 class, which means that it can move up to 110,000 m³ of soil every day. Modern bucket wheel excavators in the Rhenish lignite area move today (2010) over 240,000 m³.

Excavator 255 was moved from Garsdorf to the Frimmersdorf opencast mine, today Garzweiler opencast mine , 20 years after its commissioning on December 17, 1975 . In 1986 he got a new paddle wheel. In 1992 the excavator 255, the skip 737 and the tripper car (BSW) 939 were relocated from the Garzweiler opencast mine to the Inden opencast mine.

In 2010 the 17 m high paddle wheel was replaced again. It has a weight of 135 tons. In addition, part of the chassis was replaced. The total cost of these repairs was around EUR 8 million.

Bagger 255 has an operating weight of 5900 t, a length of 210 m and a height of 66 m.
