Herbert Sältmann (born February 15, 1925 ) was a soccer player in the Oberliga , the highest soccer division of the East German sports committee . There he played for ZSG Anker / BSG Motor Wismar .

Athletic career

Between 1942 and 1952, first division football was sometimes played in the Baltic city of Wismar . While it was TSV Wismar in the early 1942s, the successor communities SG Süd, ZSG Anker and BSG Motor Wismar continued the tradition immediately after the Second World War. Herbert Sältmann was one of the pillars of post-war football in Wismar. Age of 23, he was 1948 there when the SG Wismar South behind the SG Schwerin Mecklenburg was runner and thus for the first 1948 ostzonenmeisterschaft qualified. The Wismarers were eliminated in the first game after a 2: 3 defeat against the later finalists Freiimfelde Halle. In 1948/49 SG Süd won the championship in Mecklenburg. In the decisive game against SG Schwerin on April 10, 1949 (2-1), Sältmann was the left defender in the Wismar team. Previously, he had already contributed a goal in the 5-1 victory over SG Greifswald. Even in their second participation in the east zone championship , the SG Süd did not get beyond the first game, there was a clear 0:10 defeat against the eventual runner-up Fortuna Erfurt.

As a national champion, Wismar had also qualified for the first league of the East German Sports Committee, which was held for the first time in 1949/50. Under the new name ZSG Anker Wismar, relegation had to be fought from the beginning, and on the 5th day of play there was a bitter 11-0 defeat at SG Dresden-Friedrichstadt. Sultmann was used in 22 of the 26 played point games and was mainly called up as a left runner . He was twice successful as a goalscorer. At the end of the season, the ZSG had to play a deciding game to stay up against the tied SG Altenburg Nord. Without Sältmann, who had to be represented by the inexperienced Karl Linde, Wismar lost 3-2 and was relegated to the second-rate GDR league .

In the GDR league season 1950/51 Sältmann played all 16 point games and scored four goals in his regular position as the left runner. Again, Anker Wismar had to contest a playoff, but now for the return to the league. This time Sülmann was part of the game and achieved a return to first class with his team after a 2-1 victory over the SG Volkspolizei Potsdam. Their second league season 1951/52 contested the Wismar under the name BSG Motor. Again it was all about staying up, which was lost with 22 defeats. The 26-year-old Sältmann was only in eleven league games after missing the entire first half of the season. Called up in his usual position, he played his last season for the Wismar team. Between 1949 and 1952 he had played 49 point games, 33 of them in the league. He had been successful as a goalscorer six times.
