The 1,962 put into operation in depot Hafenbahn Rostock (short Bw Hafenbahn Rostock ) was located on the east side of the marshalling yard at the railway line Rostock Rostock seaport North at the level of the end mountain and was under the Reichsbahndirektion Schwerin . As early as the mid-1970s, it was disbanded in the course of the traction change and converted into a railway service vehicle factory for repairing freight wagons. The facilities for the expansion of the marshalling yard were later removed. The maintenance, repair and provision of diesel locomotives was carried out by the neighboring Rostock Seehafen railway depot .

As a so-called steam locomotive turning Bw, it was primarily used for turning and servicing steam locomotives whose use at the port ended. The steam and diesel locomotives used by the port railway were also based there. These included several locomotives of the series 44 (until 1971) and 57.10–35 (until 1969). In addition, the series 101 (until 1975), 102 (until 1975) and 103 (until 1969) were stationed in the depot.

In the depot there were two slagging channels with wet ash conveyors and two water cranes. A sanding system and a turntable with a diameter of 23 meters were also part of the system. A standard coal crane was initially responsible for loading coal. A railway slewing crane was added later. A social building with locomotive service, washing and changing rooms was available for the staff.
