The Bad Blankenburg (Thüringerw) station is the station of the Thuringian town of Bad Blankenburg in Saalfeld-Rudolstadt . In 1884 it went into operation on the now closed and dismantled Rudolstadt – Bad Blankenburg railway line . The Arnstadt – Saalfeld railway line was not added until 1895, which is still the only line through Bad Blankenburg today. In 2000 the line to Rudolstadt-Schwarza was closed.

location

The train station is about 500 meters from Bad Blankenburg's city center. It is located at kilometer 39.1 of the route between Arnstadt and Saalfeld and was the end point of the route from Rudolstadt-Schwarza. The adjacent streets are Rudolstädter Strasse , Wirbacher Strasse and Zum Windorf Strasse . To the east, the next station is Saalfeld (Saale) train station, about nine kilometers away , and to the west, it is Rottenbach train station, eight kilometers away .

history

Blankenburg station went into operation on August 1, 1884. At first it was only on the route to Schwarza . The Saal-Eisenbahn-Gesellschaft , which had already built the Saalbahn and wanted to expand its catchment area, had the line built. The Saal-Eisenbahn-Gesellschaft in Blankenburg also created a reception building , which was a discarded barrack from Rothenstein . An extension of the route, initially considered, was not initially planned. The sweeping system was located on today's station forecourt. The other facilities at that time already included a goods shed, a wooden engine shed, a centesimal facility and a toilet facility. The goods shed came from the Saalbahn, namely from Saalfeld , and the toilet facility from Rothenstein.

On December 2, 1895, the railway line between Arnstadt and Saalfeld, which also runs through Blankenburg, was added. Today's reception building, at least its middle wing, dates from this time. The western and eastern facilities initially only had one storey. Only later were they added a floor. The route was laid south of the Schwarza . This made it possible to bypass land and already built-up areas. At the latest when the Schwarzatalbahn opened, the Schwarza – Blankenburg line was connected to the Arnstadt line, as the trains ran from Rudolstadt via Blankenburg to Katzhütte . The Saalfeld – Arnstadt line was at a slightly higher elevation, so the tracks in Blankenburg had to be rearranged. The track, at that time directly adjacent to the station building, was relocated and threaded into the Saalfeld – Arnstadt line at the level of Wirbacher Weg. The tracks of the sweeping system that were no longer needed were then dismantled. A pavilion with shops was built on the now vacant station forecourt. In 1912 the station building was extended and enlarged. An underpass was also built between the platforms.

In the form in which the station existed for many years, it had three platforms with five tracks. Only the middle platform was covered and had a waiting room. There were also three signal boxes from the 1930s, a water tower and two locomotive sheds with a turntable. There were still facilities in the direction of Saalfeld for freight traffic and sidings were available for local operations. In 1926/27 a siding was laid to the newly established rubber factory. DR locomotives drove there until 1970 , followed by the company's own small locomotive.

Between 1985 and 1990, the shape signals were exchanged for light signals. In 1986, a second connecting line was laid on the other side of the station.

After the fall of the Wall , traffic on the route to Rudolstadt-Schwarza decreased significantly, which resulted in the closure of this route on May 28, 2000. In 1994 the water tower and the high-rise coal bunker were demolished. Two years later, the rail connection to the rubber factory was removed. Today there is only one through and one crossing track. The two side platforms are 140 meters long and 34 and 36 centimeters high. The reception building, which has been renovated in the meantime, is now privately owned and is used by a restaurant and café.

Today the station is served every hour by regional trains that run between Saalfeld and Erfurt .
