The Caltanissetta Centrale train station is the only train station within the provincial capital of Caltanissetta in central Sicily . It is located on the Catania – Aragona Caldare railway line . About six kilometers to the north is the Caltanissetta-Xirbi station on the same route where the railway to Roccapalumba branches off.

location

The station is located in the city center in a geomorphological indentation. Immediately to the north there is a one and a half kilometer long tunnel that runs under parts of the city. The station building is almost in a north-south direction on the east side of the track lane with the house platform and another central platform, two drive-through and several sidings. To the north of the station building there is a freight hall, which is no longer used as such.

history

Despite the opening on September 24, 1876, which coincided with the opening of the 29 km long Caltanissetta – Canicattì line, it took another year and a half until the 6.3 km long line to Xirbi was opened on April 8, 1878, where both connections to northern Palermo and eastern Catania existed.

The construction of the line was operated by the Società Caltanissetta Centrale . The aim of the route construction was to be able to transport agricultural goods and raw materials from the interior to the port of Catania . Caltanissetta is the largest city in Sicily inland, so without port facilities. The extensive track systems on both sides of the route bear witness to this period. Nowadays goods are almost exclusively transported by road, just as passenger traffic has declined in favor of motorized individual transport since the 1970s at the latest .

building

The two-storey, brightly plastered station building surrounds the station forecourt on three sides, on which there is a taxi rank and a bus stop. In the building there is a ticket office, a bar, a train station bookshop and public toilets. The central platform can be reached through an underpass.

The architectural style is vaguely reminiscent of Central European construction with an elegant veranda with classic, cast-iron columns on both platforms. In the south, west of the railway line, there are facilities for locomotives with outbuildings and a repair shop, a water tower and various smaller buildings. In the 1980s, a three-story staff dormitory was also built on the west side.
