Heinrich Theodor Linschmann (born December 16, 1850 in Schweinbach , † May 18, 1940 in Meiningen ) was a German pastor and later library director.

Life

Heinrich Theodor was born the son of a teacher. He attended high school in Rudolstadt and then studied theology and linguistics in Jena from 1870 to 1873 . During his studies in 1870 he became a member of the St. Pauli Jena choir . After having been assistant preacher in Rudolstadt for several years, he successively took over the Weimar pastors in Magdala , Lehnstedt and Willerstedt .

In addition to his church activities, he continued his linguistic research. A great contribution to the history of Basque philology was a very detailed new translation of the translation of the New Testament into the Basque language by Joanes Leizarraga (1506-1601) in the 16th century (I. Leiçarraga's Basque Books of 1571) by Theodor Linschmann published together with the German Romanist Hugo Schuchardt in 1900.

In 1901 he resigned from church service in order to begin a traineeship at the Leipzig University Library on September 1, 1901 . His goal was to prepare for the profession of librarian and to pursue further linguistic studies. Only one year later, on September 1, 1902, he was appointed to the ducal public library in Meiningen. Here he set up new, extensive book directories and thus opened up the book treasures to the public.

He has also published numerous articles, including in Hilgenfels' journal for scientific theology, in Eckart - Ein deutsches Literaturblatt , the German literary newspaper, as well as a number of short articles for the supplement of the Meininger daily newspaper. Ludwig Bechstein's bibliography, which he produced and which was published in 1907, is still an indispensable aid to any Bechstein research to this day.

In 1912 Linschmann was made an honorary member of the Basque Congress for Germany. On April 1, 1920 he was promoted to civil servant. In 1921, because of his merits and scientific achievements, he was appointed an external member of the Royal Academy of the Basque Language in Bilbao, founded in 1919 . On June 1, 1927, the library director retired. In May 1940, Linschmann died almost 90 years old in Meiningen (Thuringia).
