The Enna Station is located in central Sicily on the single-track electrified railway line Catania-Aragona Caldare , stick to which all passenger trains. Of the twenty daily departures there is also a direct connection between Palermo and Catania . It is managed by the Rete Ferroviaria Italiana (RFI) .

history

The station was built in the course of the construction of the Catania – Agrigento railway north of the city of Enna , at that time still called Castrogiovanni , as the city was called until 1926. Because the Messina – Fiumetorto railway was not yet completed, all rail traffic ran through the hinterland instead of along the north coast and thus via Enna station.

location

Because the small town of Enna is located on a 1000 meter high mountain plateau, which is surrounded by about 600 to 650 meters high terrain, the train station is only 600 meters above sea level, about two and a half kilometers from the urban development. But there is a regular bus shuttle service. Since 1927, the development around the station has also been called Stazione di'Enna . In addition to the southern city of Enna with its student streams, the northwestern Calascibetta and the industrial area of Enna, which has been built since the 1990s , also benefit from the train station.

The narrow space in the valley only allowed a moderately large system of tracks. In addition to the covered house platform and the also covered island platform, there is only one additional through track, which is no longer usable today. Of the former four freight train tracks on the side of the station building, only two are still in use.

The two-storey station building, which is much too large today, has also been home to the largest Sicilian bus company, SAIS Bus SpA , which was founded in the 1930s , for several years . The engine shed to the north has not been used as such since the end of the steam era. The central platform can be reached through an underpass.

Infrastructure

The service at the train station includes a ticket office, waiting rooms and toilet facilities for the disabled. Security is ensured by video surveillance and staff presence. There is a bus station in front of the station building.
