The Kan'eijisaka Station ( Japanese 寛永寺坂駅 , Kan'eijisaka-eki ) is a subterranean ghost station in Tokyo . It is located near Kan'ei-ji Temple in the Taitō District on the Keisei Main Line between Ueno and Nippori Railway Stations . Another ghost station is located on the same route with Hakubutsukan-Dōbutsuen .

history

The underground station opened in 1933 when the Keisei line was extended from Nippori to Ueno. The station is located shortly after the tunnel entrance and has two offset side platforms . During the Second World War , the station was closed in June 1945 because the railway tunnel was used as an air raid shelter. On November 1, 1946, the station was reopened for a short time until operations were stopped again on August 21, 1947. The main reason for the closure was the steep incline of the rails in the area of the station, which made it difficult for the trains to stop and start safely. On February 23, 1953, the station was completely closed and the underground platforms dismantled. The entrance building was preserved in the decades that followed and was used as a warehouse by a company until 2015. It was demolished in the summer of 2016. Before the demolition, the Mainichi Shimbun newspaper published a report on the state of the station.

Current condition

In the place of the entrance building in the Uenosakuragi district, there has been a Kombini since 2016 . The access to the underground facilities is in a fenced prefabricated building, which was newly built. From the time the station opened, a stone post has been preserved that served as a holder for flags.

The underground station can be recognized by passing trains by the widening tunnel cross-section. Platforms are no longer available. The exits are still visible; On the side in the direction of Nippori there is a sign with the previously used left-hand lettering 口 出 (“Exit”, today written 出口 ).
