The Montendre train station is in the east of the small town of Montendre in the Charente-Maritime department . The route of the Chartres – Bordeaux railway line , which runs almost in a north-south direction, crosses the avenue Sulz Am Neckar (D 730) running to the south-east and via it has access to the station building facing the city. The next two stations are Fontaines-d'Ozillac in the north and Bussac in the south, right on the border with the Gironde department .

history

The former railway company Compagnie du chemin de fer de Paris à Orléans (PO) , today the financial holding Paris-Orléans SA. , built a direct, double-track railway line between Chartre and Bordeaux in 1871, at which the Montendre station was established as an intermediate station. Initially, Montendre was the terminus for the Jonzac line, before the line was extended to Bordeaux three years later.

Until it closed in 1980, there was the Charles Amand brick factory south of the station, which in its prime in the 1950s employed around 450 people. There were several ramps and loading tracks for removal so that the merchandise could be shipped inexpensively by wagon. Today the area is unused; just like parts of the manufacturing facilities, the railway infrastructure is still visible.

architecture

The compact, two-story station building with its two one-story side wings has a representative character. The half-hip roof is covered with slate and has several dormers . The building is in the style of historicism and is well structured by the two side projections. In contrast to other station buildings of this size that have been built by this company, the Montendre station is extremely richly decorated.

service

The train station has a manned ticket office despite its relatively small number of people. All trains of the Transport express régional , which usually run non-stop between La Rochelle and Bordeaux, stop on the non-electrified railway line . Six pairs of trains run on weekdays .
