The uguisudani station ( jap. 鶯谷駅 , Uguisudani-eki , literally Nightingale Station ) is located in Taitō in Tokyo , Japan . With an average of around 24,000 passengers a day (as of 2007), it is one of the smallest train stations on the Yamanote line . The name of the station is derived from a nearby valley in which many Japanese bush singers ( , Uguisu ) once found themselves.

The station opened on July 11, 1912 as the Yamanote Line station.

Type of construction and tracks

The train station is built in the most common type of train station construction as a through station. It has a total of four platform tracks, which approach two central platforms. The lines approach the platforms according to their direction of travel and not according to their line affiliation. The Keihin-Tōhoku line drives the two outer platforms, the Yamanote line the two inner platforms.

Surroundings

There are a number of Love Hotels in the vicinity of the train station .

Directly south of the train station is a more than four hectare cemetery on which there is also a mausoleum of the Tokugawa family.

There are also cultural institutions nearby, such as a Calligraphy Museum ( 書 道 博物館 ), the Tokyo National Museum and the Tokyo National Research Institute for Cultural Assets .

In 2014, the station was used by an average of 24,444 passengers per day, making it 161st of over 900 on the list of the most frequently used stations of the JR East in 2014. With this low average usage, the station is one of the smallest on the entire Yamanote Line.
