The station Vila Nova de Gaia ( Portuguese Estação Ferroviária de Vila Nova de Gaia , formerly Gaya and originally Devesas called) is the station of the Portuguese town of Vila Nova de Gaia .

It is located on the Linha do Norte , which begins at Lisbon Santa Apolónia station and ends at Porto-Campanhã station , around 4 kilometers away . It is served by the state railway company Comboios de Portugal and the CP Urbanos do Porto . In their electronic timetable information , the station is listed under Vila Nova de Gaia-Devesas .

The station also has an extensive marshalling yard .

The station Devesas (Estação) (DVE2) of the STCP - Sociedade de Transportes Colectivos do Porto is located at the station .

history

The station was opened in 1863 as the northern terminus of the planned first major railway line in Portugal, which was to connect Lisbon with Porto and was built from both sides. At that time there was a section between Vila Nova de Gaia and Estarreja in the north . In 1864 the last section of the route was completed. However, the crossing of the Douro to the opposite Porto, which was only created in 1877 by the Ponte Maria Pia , was missing .

Between 1901 and 1902 the line was expanded to two tracks. In the 1930s, the station area was expanded. In the mid-1960s, the line was electrified .
