The Bahnhofstrasse 38 building was a hotel and later an administration building and residential and commercial building in the city center of Eisenach in Thuringia . It was located directly opposite the Eisenach train station . Originally built as the “Grand Duke of Saxony” hotel , the classicist building has seen numerous uses and structural changes over the years.

history

The building was built around 1850, roughly at the same time as the first station building opposite, as the “Grand Duke of Saxony” hotel. Richard Wagner stayed at the hotel in July 1877. After the hotel business was closed, the building served as the main branch of the Kreissparkasse Eisenach and as the administrative seat of the Eisenach district, founded in 1922 . In the 1950s, the Eisenach district archive was temporarily housed in the building . The seat of the district administration was moved to the former Hotel Rautenkranz on Eisenacher Markt in 1965 .

After 1990, parts of the building were still used as office and business premises for parties, organizations and a taxi center.

In March 2016, the building was demolished to make way for a new shopping center as part of the urban development project Gate to the City .
