history
The line from Campiglia Marittima to Piombino was inaugurated on April 5, 1892. On October 2, 1985, the double-track expansion between Populonia and Fiorentina di Piombino was opened. Towards the end of the 1950s, a branch line to the port followed in Piombino to facilitate passenger traffic to the island of Elba .
Operation today
In the area of passenger transport, only regional trains operated by Ferrovie dello Stato (FS), which is also the operator of the route, run on the route . In some cases, some trains also continue to Livorno and Pisa . There is also freight traffic to the steelworks near Piombino.
