The Dholpur – Sarmathura railway is a 72.6 km (45.4 miles) long narrow gauge railway with a gauge of 762 mm (2½ feet ) in the east of the Indian state of Rajasthan .
history
The construction of the railway line from Dholpur to Sarmathura was approved on December 14, 1905 by Maharaja Ram Singh. It was built by the princely state of Dholpur during the British-Indian colonial period .
The Dolphur train station with a ticket office, package warehouse and an office for the chief as well as the 31.5 km long section from Dholpur to Bari were formally put into operation in February 1908. The line was extended to Tantpur on July 1, 1914 and on March 1, 1929 the branch line to Sarmathura was put into operation to simplify passenger and freight traffic. The distance from Dholpur to Tantpur is 60 km and from Dholpur to Sarmathura it is 72.6 km.
Steam locomotives were originally used for operation, and later diesel locomotives.
Re-gauging
The route is currently (2018) on broad gauge of 1,776 mm (5 ft 6 in) gauge umgespurt . It is also to be extended via Karauli to Gangapur .
