Karauli ( Hindi : करौली , Karaulī ; earlier Anglicizing Kerowlee ) is a city with about 90,000 inhabitants in the east of the Indian state of Rajasthan . Karauli was the capital of the former princely state of Karauli and is now the capital of the district of the same name .

location

The city lies between two arms of the Utangan River at an altitude of about 275 m above sea level. d. M. Jaipur , the capital of Rajasthan is about 175 km to the north-west; It is a good 160 km to Agra in a north-easterly direction. The climate is warm, but rainy for Rajasthan.

The Rajasthani and Hindi speaking population is made up of approximately 77% Hindus and 22.5% Muslims ; Jains , Christians , Sikhs , Buddhists and others are numerically small minorities . As is common in India's censuses, the male population is around 12% higher than the female population.

The area around Karauli is dominated by agriculture; the city itself acts as a center for handicrafts, trade and services of all kinds (including health and education).

history

The area around Karauli is already mentioned in the Mahabharata . Medieval history sees Raja Bijai Pal (around 995) as the founder of the principality; the city itself was founded in 1348 by Arjun Pal under the name Kalyanpuri , but soon came under the influence of the Muslim Sultanate of Delhi . In the 16th and 17th centuries, the Mughal Empire was the dominant power in all of northern India; then came the Marathas for a short time and from 1818 the British .

Attractions

  • The main attraction of the city is the Prince's Palace, built in the 17th and 18th centuries. As with most of the palaces of Rajasthan, construction forms of Mughal architecture combine with Hindu details.
  • The Madan Mohan Temple is dedicated to the Hindu god Krishna .

Surroundings

  • The Jain temple, about 35 km to the north, built in the 1970s and dedicated to the last Tirthankara Mahavira , is also worth seeing.
