The Torgau – Belgern line was a standard-gauge branch line in what is now the Free State of Saxony . It ran from Torgau on the Halle – Cottbus railway to Belgern, 17 km away .

history

Prehistory and construction

As early as 1878, the city of Belgern , located in the Prussian province of Saxony , tried to establish a rail connection. But it was not until after 1900 that the plans for the route became more concrete with the support of the Prussian War Ministry, as it was primarily intended to better develop the military facilities in the Dahlener Heide . Finally, on June 30, 1911, the Prussian state parliament passed the law on the construction and operation of the Torgau – Belgern branch line. On July 27, 1914, the Schöneberg Railway Regiment No. 1 began construction work on the new line.

The section from Torgau to Mehderitzsch was already passable for freight traffic from November 16, 1914. The entire line was opened for freight traffic on January 2, 1915 and finally also for passenger traffic on April 1.

business

Up until 1928 there were three pairs of trains a day that ran as mixed freight and passenger trains. After the separation of these modes of transport by the Deutsche Reichsbahn , a railcar was used in the 1930s.

In 1960, the Belgern stoneware factory got its own siding as an extension of the line.

The Deutsche Reichsbahn unexpectedly stopped passenger traffic on September 30, 1962, despite the constant volume of traffic. One reason for this was the parallel trunk road with its heavy regular bus traffic. In 1971, the Pflückuff and Mahitzschen loading stations were closed.

The Belgern stoneware factory operated the railway line sporadically until 1991, when it was finally closed on December 31, 1995 . In November 2004, the dismantling of tracks and systems began.
