The Worcester – Voorbaai railway is a single-track, non-electrified railway line in South Africa . It connects Worcester with Voorbaai in the Western Cape Province . It is 335 kilometers long.

history

In 1887 the section Worcester - Ashton was opened by the Cape Central Railway . From 1894 New Cape Central Railway operated the route and extended it to Voorbaai until 1906. It wasn't until 1924 that South African Railways took over operations.

course

The route runs in the foothills of the Langeberg Mountains and branches off the Cape Town - Johannesburg route in Worcester . First it leads along the R60 to Swellendam . There it crosses the national road N2 and meanders along the N2 to Heidelberg , Riversdale and Albertinia. East of Albertinia it crosses the Gouritz River on a steel bridge ( Gourits River Bridge ) . At Bartlesfontein station there is a connection to the PetroSA refinery, which went into operation in 1992. The route then leads down to Mossel Bay, where it joins the George – Mossel Bay route in Voorbaai . The route is connected with numerous tight curves and gradients of up to 25 ‰ (1:40).
