Ashton is a town in Langeberg Municipality , Cape Winelands District , Western Cape Province in South Africa . It is located at the foot of the Langeberg on Route 62 between Robertson and Montagu .
In 2011 the city had 7,727 inhabitants. 86.33% of the population are classified as mixed race ( colored ) in the statistics , 8.62% are white and 4.14% are black Africans. The rest is distributed among other groups. The main language is Afrikaans , which is spoken by more than 95% of the population.
history
After the completion of the Worcester – Voorbaai railway in 1887, the Roodewal trade base got a train station and was shortly thereafter renamed Ashton (after Job Ashton, director and railway engineer of New Cape Central Railways). The town received city status in 1956.
Ashton is a well-known fruit growing area with two large canning factories. The Langeberg Fruit Company is now one of the largest producers of canned fruit in South Africa. There are also five wineries here.
