The Zemitāni – Skulte (unofficial: Riga – Skulte ) railway is a railway line in Latvia . It has the Russian track width of 1520 mm, has a length of around 52 km (56 km from Riga Central Station) and is electrified. The route is owned and operated by Latvijas dzelzceļš . Most of the line is double-lane, only the 17-kilometer-long Mangaļi – Ziemeļblāzma, Lilaste – Inčupe and Saulkrasti –Skulte sections are single-lane.

history

In 1937 the section from Riga to Mangaļi was opened as part of the Mangaļi– Rūjiena line. In 1957 the line from Riga to Mangaļi was electrified. The section from Mangaļi to Zvejniekciems followed in 1971 and 1991 the section from Zvejniekciems to Skulte . Due to the financial crisis after the collapse of the Soviet Union , the line from Skulte to Rūjiena was closed in 1996.

Operation today

Three different S-Bahn lines operate on the route from Riga. These routes run to Carnikava , Saulkrasti or Skulte. There are 16 pairs of trains per day on the route from Riga to Carnikava. The route from Riga to Saulkrasti is operated by 14 pairs of trains. The whole route from Riga to Skulte is used by ten pairs of trains per day. The drive from Riga to Skulte takes about 70 minutes. Freight trains rarely run.
