The Rīga Pasažieru Station ( Latvian Rigas Pasažieru stacija ) is the main station of the Latvian capital Riga .

It is located east of Riga's old town.

Architecture and history

Construction of the station began in 1858 as part of the construction of the railway line from Riga to Daugavpils and was financed by British contractors and led by British engineers. The foundation stone was laid on May 21, 1858 in the presence of Governor General Alexander Arkadyevich Suvorov . The inauguration of the station took place on October 12, 1861. The first station building was a small two-story building by the architect Johann Felsko , which was arranged as a terminal station . In addition to railway facilities, the building also housed a telegraph office, a post office and a police station.

In 1868 the line from Riga to Mitau was completed , then the line from Riga to Mühlgraben and in 1873 from Riga to Aahaken-Bergshof . Due to the further expansion of the railway network, the old building became too small. Large new wings were added on both sides of the old building in 1884/85 by the architect Heinrich Carl Scheel . From 1889 there was a connection to Pleskau . The traffic continued to increase significantly, so that further modifications and considerations were made to expand capacity. In 1897 it was decided to separate freight and passenger traffic. In 1903 a new freight yard was built, and in 1907 another passenger station.

In the 1930s there were further plans for extensive reconstruction of the station, which should take place from 1940 and be completed in 1945. However, due to the Second World War , the plans could not be implemented. In the 1950s, the route was electrified.

In 1957, the renovation of the station began. A new building made of glass and concrete was created. A striking tower was erected on the north side of the modern building. V. Kuznetsov and V. Tsipulin worked as architects. The reopening took place on July 21, 1961. The old terminal station was then finally demolished in 1965. From 2000, the station complex was modernized again. The reopening took place on August 16, 2001.
