Bahzani or Bahzane ( Arabic بحزاني, DMG Baḥzānī , Aramaic ܒܝܬ ܚܙܢܐ, Kurmanji Bahzanê ) is a small town near Mosul in Ninawa , North iraq . The place is located in the Al-Hamdaniya district on the Nineveh Plain . The city has been one of the disputed areas of Northern Iraq since 2003 .

population

The majority of the population Bahzanis are Yazidis , and there are also a small minority of Christian Assyrians and Arab Muslims. The Yazidis in Bahzani and from the neighboring town of Baschiqa all speak Arabic as their mother tongue.

history

Bahzani is officially Iraqi territory but has been controlled and claimed by the Autonomous Region of Kurdistan since the fall of Saddam Hussein in 2003 . According to Article 140 of the Iraqi Constitution , a referendum should decide whether it should continue to be administered by the central government or the Kurdistan Autonomous Region. The status of the city is still not entirely clear. According to Human Rights Watch , UNHCR and other human rights organizations, the city's residents will be forced and threatened with violence if they do not choose to incorporate the city into the Kurdish Autonomous Region.

In June 2014, the ISIS terrorist militia attacked the city and the Yazidi population has since fled the city. As a result of the battle for Mosul , Bahzani was liberated by Peshmerga units in October 2016 .
