Baigorixus

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Baigorixus , also Baicorixus , is the name of a Gallic / Celtic deity from the Pyrenees . It was found once on an inscription. This inscription bears the text:

BAIGORIXO DEO VERNUS SERANI VSLM

In the Revue Archéoligique de Paris 1859 the name is derived from the Celtic baya ("river"), another explanation is suspected with baig ("boast") and rix ("ruler").

The name can be found again in the historic French province of Bigorre in what is now the Hautes-Pyrénées department .
