The bailong elevator

The Bailong Elevator ( Chinese : 百 龙; literally: Hundred Dragons Elevator) is a glass elevator that was built on the side of a huge cliff in Wulingyuan Landscape Park near the city of Zhangjiajie in the People's Republic of China between 1999 and 2002. With a height of 326 m, it is the world's tallest outdoor elevator and has been recognized as such by the Guinness Book of Records since 2015 .

The system consists of three cabins, each of which can accommodate up to 50 people and move at 3 m per second. With the help of detectors that register seismic waves , the facility is immediately shut down in the event of an earthquake.

The construction of the elevator was initially controversial, as the site has been recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1992 . Nevertheless, the construction did not lead to the withdrawal of the World Heritage title. Operations were suspended for ten months from 2002–2003 due to safety problems.
