Coordinates: 42 ° 1 '34 " N , 35 ° 9' 26" O The Balatlar church or church Sinope Koimesis is an early Byzantine Church the type of a basilica in the quarter-Ada the city Sinop (antique Sinope) in the northern Turkish province Sinop to the shores of the Black Sea .
In the building there are frescoes of Jesus , Mary and the saints , but they are badly damaged by vandalism and weathering.
Archaeological excavations
Excavations have been taking place in the church since 2009 under the direction of Gülgün Köroğlu from the Department of Art History at Mimar Sinan University . Turkish archaeologists found a piece of rock with crosses engraved on it. With regard to the archaeological process, Köroğlu noted:
“We have found a holy thing in a chest. It is a piece of a cross, and we think it was. This stone chest is very important to us. It has a history and is the most important artifact we have unearthed so far. "
