The Mubarak al-Kabir port ( Arabic ميناء مبارك الكبير, DMG Mīnāʾ Mubārak al-kabīr ) is a controversial Kuwaiti port project under construction in the Persian Gulf . The completion and commissioning of the port on Bubiyan , the largest island in the Kuwaiti island chain, was initially planned for 2016, but was then announced for 2019 in 2018.

history

While completion of the port facility was initially planned for 2016, construction was delayed.

Dispute over the port

The planned port led to criticism in neighboring Iraq. Research by Iraqi economist Riyadh Jawad said a 60 percent drop in traffic to the nearby Iraqi port of Umm Qasr would be expected if the Kuwaiti port opened. He questioned the economic viability of the planned Kuwaiti port.

According to observers, the port project is worsening the already strained relationship between Iraq and Kuwait; The project is seen by many Iraqis and the Iraqi government as a provocation and felt to be unnecessary. The United Nations has been asked to help resolve the conflict.

On September 8, 2011, the Iraqi Foreign Minister said that the conflict over the Mubarak al-Kabir port project had been resolved. In a further statement by the Foreign Minister, the latter said that a report by the technical staff after a visit to Kuwait had eliminated any worries about the port.
