Balbegno Castle

Balbegno Castle is a tower house near the Scottish village of Fettercairn in the Council Area of Aberdeenshire . In 1972 the building was included in the Scottish monument lists in the highest monument category A. The associated pigeon house and its gardens are independently classified as Category A buildings. The stables, on the other hand, are classified as Category B structures. All of the structures mentioned together form a category A monument ensemble. An additional classification as Scheduled Monument was lifted in 2005.

description

The Tower House, built in 1569, is isolated around one kilometer southwest of Fettercairn. IWOD and E IRVEIN are indicated as builders on an inserted panel . The roof structure in its current form is of a later date. The very late 16th or the late 17th to the early 18th century is given as the construction period. A grand piano was added in the course of the 18th century. The facades of Balbegno Castle are plastered with Harl , with natural stone surrounds .

The L-shaped Tower House is unusually oriented with the outer angle facing south. Also unusual is the tower's interior corner, which takes up almost the entire area between the two legs and is one storey higher than the Tower House. Its edge is rounded on the top floor. Next to it is a richly sculpted window that is dated to the early 17th century. The vaulted hall on the first floor measures 9 m × 5.6 m. The extension has two floors.

Pigeon House at Balbegno Castle

The pigeon house, built in the course of the 17th century, is around 300 m east of Balbegno Castle. The masonry of the 5.7 m × 5 m long, elongated building consists of reddish rubble . The entrance door is on the west gable side. A cornice runs around below the steeply inclined gable roof with stone slab roofing . The nest boxes inside are not preserved.

The gardens, which are located directly to the south and enclosed by a quarry stone wall, were laid out in the course of the 16th and 18th centuries. Stone pillars with seated spheres flank the entrance gate.

The one- to two-story stables were built in the early 19th century. Their masonry consists of quarry stone with natural stone surrounds. The main facade is symmetrical, with a two-story middle section. This is designed with two segment-arched gates. The flanking wings continue and form a U-shaped floor plan. All parts of the building close with hipped roofs .
