The Balclutha Road Bridge , which the New Zealand river Clutha River in Balclutha crosses, is one of the most famous road bridges on the South Island . It is often referred to as “ The Clutha Bridge ”, although there are numerous bridges over the country's second longest river. The railroad crosses the river a few hundred meters downstream at the Balclutha Rail Bridge.
This tied arch bridge , built between 1933 and 1935, was designed by WL Newnham to be earthquake-proof and flood -resistant so that it is considered safe from the two most common natural events that occur in southern New Zealand.
The bridge is made of reinforced concrete and has six parabolic spans, each 36.6 m. The 6.7 m wide carriageway is flanked on both sides by a 1.4 m wide walkway; the structure is 11.8 m wide. The bridge crosses the South Island's most important highway, New Zealand State Highway 1, on its stretch between Dunedin and Invercargill .
This bridge is historically the third structure to cross the river here or not far from here. The first bridge, built in 1868, was destroyed after only ten years by severe flooding when a bridge further upstream in Beaumont was swept away by the flood and collided with the bridge in Balclutha. The second bridge was built in 1881, but was inadequate for the needs of modern automobile traffic and was eventually replaced by the existing structure.
The Balclutha Road Bridge was classified as a Category 1 Historic Place by the New Zealand Historic Places Trust on December 13, 1990 .
