Balcombe is a village and Civil Parish in District of Mid Sussex in the county of West Sussex in England . The population in 2011 was 1917 people.
geography
The city is 50 kilometers south of London and 25 kilometers north of Brighton . The distance to Chichester in the west is about 50 kilometers. Nearby is the architecturally very impressive Ouse Valley Viaduct over the River Ouse .
history
The first houses were built in the early 17th century. The name of the place goes to the term mining camp place back because too earlier time in the area mining ( mining was operated). "Bal" means mining in the Cornish language and "combe" is probably derived from the Roman word camp . So it is a Celtic-Roman word creation.
In the ground below Balcombe there are large fields with oily rock that can be used to extract oil using the hydraulic fracturing process (fracking). However, when further test drilling was to be carried out to investigate possible economic extraction, there were considerable protests from the population in 2013. Opponents and supporters of fracking tried to use the conflict politically. During the protests there were also arrests of demonstrators who had started with the slogan "Frack off".
