The earliest mention of Baldoon's lands is found in documents from 1533/1534, when the Scottish King James V awarded them to an Archibald Dunbar . When Baldoon Castle was built is unknown. The early 17th century is named as the construction period.

Today only a few fragments remain of Baldoon Castle. The largest is 19.4 m long and 7.6 m high and comes from the west facade. The masonry is around 76 cm thick. To the west are the remains of an enclosed garden. The Scottish writer Walter Scott took Baldoon Castle as a model for the castle in his novel The Bride of Lammermoor .

The entrance to the gate is around 50 m north of the ruins. It probably dates from the second half of the 17th century. The renaissance building is considered an important and especially in this region very rare example of this architectural epoch. The two posts have a square plan. They are decorated with alternating ribbons made of a diamond ornamentation and a coarse embossing . The closing, ornate caps create the impression of a broken cornice that is open at the top .
