Baldwin (Sankt Emmeram)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Balduin , also Baldwin Kötzl († 1324 in Avignon ) was abbot in the monastery of Sankt Emmeram from 1312 to 1324.

The monastery of Sankt Emmeram had to defend itself against the claims of the Regensburg bishops, who sought to strengthen their position by having a say in the election of the abbot, by extensive entertainment costs and influence in the management of property and wanted to bind the monastery more closely to the monastery .

The monastery, on the other hand, tried to document its position as an independent monastery and sought support from the Pope. Baldwin had his adversary in Bishop Nikolaus von Ybbs . In order to gain certainty about controversial points, Baldwin traveled to the Pope in Avignon in 1319 . However, the negotiations dragged on for so long that he finally died there in 1324. He was buried in the Cathedral of Avignon . In a bull of 1326 Pope John XXII. the exemption (independence) of the monastery is confirmed.
