Ballenhaus, view from the north

The Ballenhaus Schongau was built as a Schranne for the storage of goods and above it were rooms of the city administration of Schongau . A characteristic feature of the free-standing structure are the stepped gables on the north and south sides. It is located between Marienplatz and Lindenplatz.

History and description

In 1405, the Bavarian dukes of the city granted foreign merchants permission to sell goods, and from 1407 they approved city scales . This building was built in 1420 in order to be able to store goods from the trade flows here. Storage fees were an important source of income for the city. After the city fire of May 22nd, 1493, the building was rebuilt until 1515. After it was already in decline, a third of the structure was demolished between 1858 and 1860.

Since the renovation in 1987, there has been a restaurant on the ground floor, while the upper floor contains a hall for events. The city council used to use this room for meetings. In addition, the building was used by the cantor and the schoolmaster .
