The film shows the work of robots in the manufacture of automobiles, including welding and painting. The film is divided into four music parts, with the work of the robots running synchronously with the music:
- Initialize - Études: Habanera ( Carmen ) by Georges Bizet
- Binary synchronization - pas de deux: Waltz of flowers ( The Nutcracker ) by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky
- Sub-routine - Divertissément: Pizzicato ( Sylvia ) by Léo Delibes
- Dynamic Array - Finale: Overture 1812 by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky

Ballet Robotique was created as a background projection for the Bird and the Robot show at the General Motors pavilion in the Disney theme park Epcot . The film footage comes from the production rooms of General Motors, Chevrolet and Delco Products, among others, with puttakes of films already made being used for Ballet Robotique . The music was recorded by the London Royal Philharmonic Orchestra under the direction of David Spear. The film was shown in October 1982 at the Chicago International Film Festival .
Awards
Ballet Robotique was nominated in 1983 for an Oscar in the Best Short Film category.
