The ballet school of the Hamburg Ballet has been located in the Hamburg district of Hamm at Caspar-Voght-Strasse 54 in the "Ballet Center Hamburg - John Neumeier" since 1989 . Its director is John Neumeier . Young people between the ages of 10 and 18 are trained here for stage dance . The school houses the training institute, the company's training and rehearsal rooms, as well as a boarding school and a canteen.

education

The focus of the training is on classical-academic dance, which includes classroom and pas de deux, classical and contemporary variations and Neumeier repertoire. In addition, great emphasis is placed on good training in modern dance technique, dance composition, character dance, strength training and Pilates. The theoretical subjects include anatomy, music theory and dance history.

The duration of the training is set for eight years. An entrance exam is required.

The admission age for preschool is 7 to 9 years, for the training classes 10 to 16 years and for the theater classes 16 to 18 years. Physical suitability, rhythmic talent, dancing disposition, improvisational talent and a ballet technique appropriate to the age are required.

history

The beginnings of the school go back to 1978. The first lesson took place quite improvised, in a ballet hall of the Hamburg State Opera , in the afternoon between morning and evening rehearsals. Later they moved into their own rooms. Finally, from 1987 to 1989, the former secondary school for girls on Caspar-Voght-Straße (OCV) in Hamm was converted into a ballet school. The school building is the work of the architect and town planner Fritz Schumacher . It was built in 1929-30.

In 1930, the artist Anita Rée created the picture Orpheus with the animals in the former gymnastics room - today the "Fokine Studio" - for the school as part of the art funding program for wall pictures in Hamburg's state buildings .

Support association

The association "Friends of the Ballet Center eV" supports the school financially and ideally. The association would like to give young and talented people who cannot afford the long and cost-intensive training, through scholarships, the opportunity to concentrate carefree on their training in dance.
