Ballhaus Tiergarten
The Ballhaus Tiergarten is a historic building at Perleberger Straße 62 in the Berlin district of Moabit in the Mitte district . The listed building has been the residence of the Uzbek embassy since 2001 .
history
The building was built in 1879/80 and initially served as an officers' mess for the 1st Guard Field Artillery Regiment. It was built away from the crew quarters according to a design by the garrison building inspector Otto Heimerdinger, who also took over the construction management. According to the ideas of the military administration, the building was erected on what was then a free space in the middle of a green area.
Architectural description
The one-storey building, built in the Italian villa style, is framed by two low side wings on both sides. The influence of classical architecture based on the model of the architect Carl Ferdinand Busse is clearly recognizable through the yellow and red bricks and the arched windows . The hall, which was formerly created as a dining room for the officers, is also dominated by mighty arched windows.
Directly behind the main entrance is an approximately 120 m² large reception room, which is now called the "German Hall". The high ceiling of this hall was destroyed in the 1930s; for economic reasons, a simple false ceiling was added to hide the destruction. Uzbek construction workers took over the restoration of the original ceiling by removing the false ceiling and creating a reproduction from preserved fragments of the original stucco ceiling.
The main building was expanded in the period 1934–1935 when an extension was built to the east, which contained additional halls and a kitchen. This happened in one step with the renovation of the neighboring barracks, which was upgraded for the war academy.
post war period
After the end of the Second World War , on the one hand, the name of the building, which is still known today, "Ballhaus Tiergarten" was created; on the other hand, the building was unused for a long time and was increasingly exposed to decay. The building, which is a listed building in Berlin, was extensively renovated in 2001 and since then has housed the embassy of the Republic of Uzbekistan.
Surroundings
In the adjacent green area, which was once laid out as a recreational garden for the officers, there is a stele that is intended to commemorate those who died in the Franco-German War . It is a sandstone stele, on the marble base of which the locations where the individual battles of the war took place are named. The stele is crowned by a Prussian eagle.
Todays use
In addition to the seat of the Uzbek embassy mentioned above, music concerts are also held in the historic building .
Others
The entire site was originally surrounded by a brick wall, of which only a remnant remains today. Remnants can be found in front of the officers' former home, today's Perleberger Strasse 62A.
