Ballycarbery Castle

Ballycarbery Castle ( Irish Caisleán Bhaile Uí Chairbre ) is a ruined castle 3 km from Cahersiveen in County Kerry, Ireland . The ruin is on a grassy hill above the sea. Not far from there are Cahergall Fort and Leacanabuaile Fort.

history

There was a kind of residence on this site as early as 1398, but the ruins that are visible today date from the 16th century. Some sources then referred to the castle as belonging to the McCarthy Mors , but it is not known whether it actually belonged to this family or to their overseers, the O'Connells . After the death of Donal McCarthy Mor , it fell to Sir Valentine Browne . In 1652, during the Wars of the Three Kingdoms , Ballycarbery Castle was shelled with cannons by parliamentary troops. In the 18th century a house was built on the wall of the barn in which the Lauder family lived. This house was demolished at the beginning of the 20th century.

description

The castle was surrounded by a high wall, less than half of which has survived. There are loopholes along the foot of what is now the remains of the wall . There is a staircase in part of the wall, but it is difficult to access.

The ground floor of the castle consisted of several rooms, but today only one room with walls and roof remains. It is a large room with a fairly high roof; a staircase leads up in one corner. There are two flights of stairs that lead to the first floor and a path up to the back of the castle as the entire rear wall of the castle is missing. One of the stairs is still in full height on the ground floor and is in very good condition. The other is accessible from outside the room and is slightly damaged. The first floor is covered with grass and still has a few windows and some small rooms, but it is mostly open. The first floor is the highest, still accessible part of the castle ruins, as the steps to the second floor must have been attached to the rear wall of the building, which is missing today.

Until about 2017 you could walk around the castle grounds and climb the ruins. But the castle ruins are on private property and the owner recently blocked access to the castle. Today visitors can only admire the building from a small parking lot about 200 meters in front of the castle.
