Ballycowan Castle ( Irish Caisleán Bhaile Mhic Comhainn ) is the ruins of a low castle 4 km west of Tullamore in County Offaly, Ireland .

history

Thomas Morres had a permanent house built in 1589 on the site of an O'Molloy castle that burned down in 1557 or a tower house called Baile Mhic Abhainn .

Sir Jasper Herbert and his wife, Lady Jane Finglas , had the adjacent tower built in 1626 on a piece of land that they had received during the plantation .

In the time of Oliver Cromwell , the southern part of the castle was blown up from a hill 90 meters away. The castle lands were confiscated in 1666 and loaned to the Earl of Mountrath .
