Ballyloughan Castle ( Irish Caisleán Bhaile an Lochain ) is a ruin in the Irish County Carlow . It is located about seven kilometers southeast of the city of Muine Bheag .
history
Built in the 13th century, the property was originally provided with its own moat . It consisted of a courtyard about 43 meters long and 46 meters wide, which was surrounded by a wall of unhewn granite blocks and on which there was a rectangular building. The building was first owned by a family called the Kavanagh and later passed to the Bagenal family. In the 18th century it was used as a country house. Today only one gate, two corner towers and the former gatehouse are left of the property . The ruin is registered as a national monument and can be visited. The interior of the gatehouse can still be entered today, as can one of the two towers.
