Ballyshannon Castle ( Irish Caisleán Bhéal Átha Seanaidh ) is an Outbound lowland castle in Ballyshannon in Ireland's County Donegal . The castle was an O'Donnell fortress . Today there are no visible remains of it.
history
Niall Garbh Ó Domhnaill had the castle built in 1423 to control the ford over the Erne . The castle was captured and sacked in 1522 by the troops Conn O'Neill, 1st Earl of Tyrone . Sir Conyers Clifford's army was repulsed by Hugh Roe O'Donnell after the castle was besieged for three days during the Battle of Ballyshannon in 1597. After the financial decline of the O'Donnells in 1606, Ballyshannon Castle went to Henry Folliott, 1st Baron Folliott .
In 1720 the castle was demolished and a cavalry barracks built in its place. At the beginning of the 20th century, the site was converted into a marketplace where agricultural products are offered.
