The Erne ( Irish Abhainn na hÉirne, An Éirne ) is a river in the north-west of Ireland .
It rises in County Cavan in the Republic of Ireland , flows through County Fermanagh in Northern Ireland , in turn crosses the border with the Republic of Ireland and then flows into Donegal Bay and thus into the Atlantic at Ballyshannon in County Donegal . In County Fermanagh it crosses Lough Erne . The course of the river is around 120 kilometers long and very popular with trout anglers.
The Erne is connected to the River Shannon by the 60 km long Shannon-Erne Canal . The intergovernmental Irish-Northern Irish authority Waterways Ireland is responsible for water law supervision and management .
Others
The river shares its name with a mythical princess named Éirne . The song "Buachaill Ón Éirne" is a well-known Irish traditional about a young man from the Erne region. It has appeared in recordings by Irish folk and pop groups singing Gaelic such as Clannad and The Corrs .
