Baloji (born September 12, 1978 in Lubumbashi , Zaire (now DR Congo ), bourgeois Serge Tshiani ) is a Belgian rapper and filmmaker of Congolese origin. When MC Balo became known in the Starflam group , he left the group in 2004 and began a career as a solo artist in 2006. In 2019, his film Zombies won the main prize at the International Short Film Festival Oberhausen 2019 .

Life

Baloji was born in Lubumbashi and moved to Belgium with his father as a child, his mother stayed in what was then still called Zaire. At the age of 15 he founded the rap group Starflam with friends. In 1998 they released their first album Starflam . In 2004 he left the group and began his career as a solo artist in 2006. In 2008 he released his first solo album Hotel Impala . His album Kinshasa Succursale was released in 2010, followed by 64 Bits and Malachite in 2015 . In 2016 he performed at the Les Ardentes Festival in Liège . His most recent release is 137 Avenue Kaniama from 2018.

In 2019 he released his short film Zombies , which won the main prize at the 2019 International Short Film Festival. The film features Gaëlle Kibikonda , Popaul Amisi , Divine Bamba , Kevin Shakira and others. The film was produced in the DR Congo and Belgium .
