Balthasar Krems

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Balthasar Krems (born November 27, 1760 in Mayen ; † May 4, 1813 in Mayen ) was a stocking knitter and in 1810 developed a prototype of a sewing machine . This is a single-thread chainstitch sewing machine that is powered by the foot. The fabric was conveyed through a spiked wheel. He invented the machine sewing needle, in which the needle eye is located at the lower, pointed end of the sewing needle. This construction is what makes a sewing machine possible in the first place.

His portrait can be found on a memorial plaque set into a wall at the entrance to Genoveva Castle in Mayen .
