Baltic Energy Market Interconnection Plan
The Baltic Energy Market Interconnection plan (BEMIP) is a plan to link the energy networks of all Baltic Sea - coastal states except Russia. It was adopted by the EU Commission in November 2008 and is part of the Trans-European Networks .
The two main objectives of the EU are the full integration of the Baltic States into the European electricity and gas market and the improvement of connections between the Baltic States and its neighboring countries.
For this purpose, the EU originally planned to build various gas pipelines:
- Amber between Poland and Lithuania
- Balticconnector between Finland and Estonia
- Baltic Gas Interconnector between Germany and Sweden
- Baltic Pipe from Denmark via Poland and the Baltic States to the Balticconnector pipeline
- Deudan between Germany and Denmark
- InterTransGas between Germany and Poland
- Skanled between Norway, Sweden and Denmark
- a western connection between Denmark and Norway
and the revision of the Danish gas network, as well as a gas storage facility in Lithuania and Latvia and a liquid gas terminal each in Finland, Poland and the three Baltic states.
In addition, power lines are planned by the EU between
- Finland and Estonia
- Estonia and Latvia
- Lithuania and Sweden
- Lithuania and Poland
- Poland and Ukraine
- Poland and Germany
- Germany and Sweden
- Germany and Denmark
The EU regards 2015 as the target year for the electricity market.
In addition to the infrastructural changes, the EU's plan also envisages the creation of a joint northern European-Baltic trading platform for electricity and the deregulation of the Baltic electricity markets.
