Baltic International was founded in 1992 by US businessmen to acquire shares in Latavio and to develop Riga Airport into a regional hub. The plans failed, among other things, because of the resistance of the neighboring states Estonia and Lithuania . Baltic International then started flight operations with Tupolev Tu-134 aircraft to Germany and Switzerland, and later to London-Gatwick.

In September 1995, the Latvian state founded a new airline, airBaltic , together with Scandinavian Airlines , Baltic International and other investors , which went into service on October 1, 1995.

fleet

The company initially flew with 3 Tupolev Tu-134B . Two Boeing 727-100 (YL-BAE, YL-BAF) and DC-9-15 were added later .
