The Baluarte Bridge is a cable-stayed bridge in northern Mexico . The 1,142-meter-long structure is part of the highway that connects the coastal city of Mazatlán on the Pacific with the state of Durango . It leads over the 400 meter deep gorge of the Río Baluarte and was officially included in the Guinness Book of Records in January 2012 as the highest cable-stayed bridge in the world, with a height difference of 402.5 meters between the valley floor and the roadway . Construction began in 2007 and was completed in autumn 2012. In the course of the 200th anniversary of Mexico's independence, the bridge was opened to traffic. The investment volume was around two billion pesos (around 116 million euros ). The highest pylon is 169 meters high, the span is 520 meters. Four lanes lead over the 16 meter wide bridge .
