The Banca Carige , former Cassa di Risparmio di Genova e Imperia (Carige), is an Italian bank based in Genoa .

history

The “ Monte di Pietà di Genova”, which was founded in 1483 by the Franciscan Beato Angelo da Chivasso, is regarded as the first predecessor of the Banca Carige . By decree of King Charles Albert of Sardinia-Piedmont , the "Cassa di Risparmio di Genova" was founded in 1846, which took over the activities of the Monte di Pietà di Genova and expanded geographically. In 1967 it was renamed “Cassa di Risparmio di Genova e Imperia”. In December 1991 the bank was restructured and the name changed to "Banca Carige". The institute has been listed on the Borsa Italiana in Milan since 1995.

Between 2014 and 2019, the tenth largest bank in Italy accumulated losses of 1.5 billion euros and was becoming increasingly indebted. In December 2018, the bank was supposed to be saved by a capital increase of 400 million euros, but this was blocked by a major shareholder. The Italian state announced in January 2019 that it would provide guarantees for bonds issued by the institute. The European Central Bank placed Banca Carige under administration, and three interim administrators and a supervisory committee were appointed as the new management of the bank.
