Banda (ethnic group in Central Africa)

The Banda are a people of the Central African Republic with minorities in the Congo and Cameroon .

They speak a Niger-Congo language of the Adamawa-Ubangi -Sprachgruppe that with the neighboring languages Baya and Ngbandi is related. There were about 1.3 million banda at the turn of the 21st century. The Banda have patrilineal inheritance rights and live under the local rule of a chairman. Rural banda grow corn , cassava , peanuts , sweet potatoes, and tobacco . Men hunt and fish, while women collect wild fruits and arable crops. Banda artisans produce wood carvings for rituals and utility tools; they are known for their large slit drums carved in the shape of an animal . The polyphonic music of the dialect group Banda Linda was made internationally known by the ethnomusicologist Simha Arom .

Before coming into contact with the European conquerors, they lived independently; they only elected warlords in times of crisis, after the war these warriors were again deposed.
