Bangor Castle

Bangor Castle ( Irish Caisleán Bheannchair ) is a country house in Castle Park in the city of Bangor in County Down, Northern Ireland .

The imposing building is an elegant mansion in neo-Gothic style with 35 bedrooms and a huge music salon. It was attached to an earlier monastery that was inhabited by Franciscans until the abolition of the English monasteries under Henry VIII in 1542. Today the offices of the city administration are located there.

history

The house was designed by Scottish architect William Burn and completed in 1852 for Robert Edward Ward, brother of the third Viscount Bangor and High Sheriff of Down for 1842. The property had an area of approximately 24 km² and covered half of the city of Bangor. Robert's only daughter and heiress, Matilda Catherine Maude, married soldier John Bingham, 5th Baron of Clan Morris . After his death in 1916, Lady Clanmorris became the owner of the house.

When the district administration bought the manor house and the property after Lady Clanmorri's death in 1941, the music salon became the town hall. The first district assembly took place there almost exactly 100 years after the building was completed.

The gardens, which were laid out by the Ward family in the 1840s, won many awards for their excellent flowers and are open to the public. The house also houses the Ward and Bingham Family Museum, where you can also see the Victoria Cross awarded to Commander Hon. Edward Bingham , son of the 5th Lord Clan Morris .
