The Bank One Corporation was temporarily the fifth largest bank in the United States, whose shares on the NYSE were traded. The direct origin of Bank One lies in the First Banc Group , which was founded in 1968 as a holding company for the older City National Bank from Columbus and took over the Farmers Savings & Trust Company from Mansfield in the same year . At the time, Ohio jurisdiction prohibited merging banks across county boundaries, but allowed umbrella companies to own multiple separate banks within the state's territory. In addition, Holdings was not allowed to use the word “bank” in their name, which is why the spelling “First Banc Group” was chosen as the company . In October 1979, the First Banc Group was renamed Banc One Corporation and each member bank was given the name Bank One with a geographic suffix for its respective area of operation. In the years and decades that followed, Banc One Corp. extended to other states. In 1998, Banc One Corporation took over Illinois- based First Chicago NBD . The newly created bank was renamed Bank One Corporation and moved its headquarters to the First National Plaza building in Chicago, which was then renamed “Bank One Tower”. In July 2004, Bank One Corporation was acquired by JPMorgan Chase in one of the largest corporate acquisitions of the 2000s for $ 59 billion , and then-General Manager of Bank One, James Dimon , assumed the post of CEO at JPMorgan Chase.
