The Banka Kombetare Tregtare ( Acronym : BKT ; German "National Commercial Bank") is a private bank , in Albania and in Kosovo operates. It was founded as an independent credit institution from the merger of Banka Kombëtare (National Bank) and Banka Tregtare (Handelsbank) in January 1993. It has been privatized since 2000 . Since June 30, 2009, the shares have been wholly owned by the Turkish company Çalık Financial Services , a subsidiary of Çalık Holding .

history

The first BKT bank branch was opened in this neo-classical building in the old town of Durrës . Above the entrance there is a statue of the Illyrian Queen Teuta , which is also shown on the company's logo

BKT is one of the oldest banking houses in Albania. Their first bank branch - back then as Banka Kombëtare - opened on November 29, 1925 in Durrës . Representations in Shkodra and Vlora followed on November 1 and 15, 1926 respectively .

In 1997 BKT was transformed into a joint stock company with a capital of 2.7 billion Lek .

In 2000 the privatization process was finished and on July 6th of the same year the Albanian Parliament approved the sale between the Ministry of Finance and a consortium of international investors. These included the Turkish Kentbank with 60 percent, the International Finance Corporation with 20 percent and the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development with the remaining 20 percent. The purchase agreement went into effect on October 17, 2000 and approximately $ 10 million was invested in the company in November . Just three years after the takeover by the consortium, BKT reached a total capital of 14.64 million US dollars, which made it the bank with the largest capital in Albania.

In 2006, the parent company Çalık Financial Services took over the shares of Kentbank, making Çalık 60 percent of the company. On June 30, 2009, Çalık bought the other 40 percent and has been the sole owner of the company's shares ever since.

BKT has also been represented in Kosovo since 2007.
