Bankura is a city in the Indian state of West Bengal .
The city is the capital of the Bankura district of the same name . Bankura has the status of a municipality . The city is divided into 23 wards (constituencies).
Demographics
The city's population is 137,386 according to the 2011 census. Bankura has a gender ratio of 967 women per 1000 men and thus a male surplus typical for India. The literacy rate was 86.1% in 2011. Almost 92% of the population are Hindus , approx. 7% are Muslim and approx. 1% belong to another or no religion. 8.8% of the population are children under 6 years of age. Bengali is the main language in and around the city.

The Bankura University is the only university in the city. There are also several colleges and schools in the city.
Infrastructure
Bankura train station is on the main Adra – Midnapore line.
